I have to be honest. I really do not know what I want, but when I look at web applications and desktop applications, I am amazed by both. I say, "That web 2.0 does amazing UI trickery which we have had since the days of Motif." Sense the sarcasm?
I think that there are some applications that really fit on the web. Most of my software development experience is in web development. I love the web. I want more from my apps though. As a Mac user, I am using Mail.app, NetNewsWire, Safari, XCode, Textmate, and other. What on the web is going to take those away? Well google has taken mail reader and new readers for some, but I like the cute native feel of my applications, and google can't take that. I think this debate is also open to debate because most cannot think of life after the browser. I am here to tell you that there is life after the browser, and it will better smarter, dynamic native applications that ends the life of browsers. Java, XUL, whatever. AJAX is not the only way to give users more usability in manipulating data.
I am off my soapbox for a while. The next post related to this might reveal my schizophrenia. I think that web applications have much better development tools. That is why the developers are there. Ruby, Python, Perl are all much more productive than C++.
